On Saturday night, July 17, an enthuisiastic and appreciative crowd spanning the gamut from Texas, to Boston of about 200 were treated to the rich harmonies of the acapella quartet out of Denvert, McPhly at performance park. This concert was third in a series of concerts being hosted by Supporters of the Performing Arts (SOPA) in its capital campaign to raise $5 million for a new performing arts center for the Estes Park community.
McPhly did not disappoint with its rich and sonorous harmonies, ringing throughout the park that night as the crowd hooted and hollered and laughed at the joking Curtis Terry of the quartet. Favorites such as Come “Phly” with Me, Desperado, Grow Old with You, Their Hearts Were Full of Spring, were just some of the selections that were shared. The crowd cheered them on to another number, and the quartet hung around singing with audience members and signing the popular CD well into the dark as part of the afterglow.
McPhly was generous to donate all their time to SOPA, as previous arrangements were to pay mileage for the group to off-set their expenses. So enthralled with the possibility of having another performance venue to host their talent and their likes, business coordinator waived even their mileage as it was “such a treat to perform in a beautiful town and for such a cause.” Since the naming rights for the facility at $2.5 million are still available, jokingly Curtis Terry noted that the name “McPhly Performing Arts Center’, had a really nice ring to it”.
SOPA’s Concert Series will be active again this weekend with two benefit performances by our local Oratorio Society presenting the concert version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore on Saturday at 7 PM and again on Sunday at 3 PM at the Estes Park High School Auditorium. Later on Sunday evening the 25th, the Estes Park Jazz Big Band under the direction of 19 year verteran Chuck Varilek will present a Jazz Vocalist concert featuring local artists at performance park at 7 PM.
All concerts are open to the public with a free-will offering to be used for the construction of the performing arts center. The energy, excitement and enthusiasm of concert goer’s at last week’s concert is the exact enthusiasm needed to see this project to fruition. To-date $2.2 million has been raised.
